Tasting note from Stephanie Macleod our Malt Master: Compared to the 15 year old, this whisky shows a deepening of the red berry aromas. There’s green apple and Aberfeldy’s signature honey floral notes. Being older and having spent longer in the wine cask, it’s richer and more decadent, more syrupy versus jammy, and has a softening of the spice notes – the tannin notes, which come across as cinnamon in the 15, dissipate leaving a velvety and more mellow dram.

Aberfeldy is the only distillery built by the Dewar family. Initially intended as an ingredient for their Blended Scotch, our team of 12 operators craft a Single Malt with fruity and honeyed aromas.

Aberfeldy is known as The Golden Dram due to the alluvial gold that is rumoured to lie in our water source, the Pitilie Burn. We use 7.5 tons of lightly malted barley per batch and allow a gentle fermentation over 70 hours to give plenty of time for sweet, fruity flavour development. Our tall stills are heated slowly for plenty of copper contact to retain these bright flavours.

Aberfeldy is usually matured in a range of cask types giving complexity. This whisky also has approachable orange and honey flavours when young and over time subtle floral and spiced aromas can emerge. Look out for interesting finishes such as Madeira or red wine that complement our house style perfectly.

Every year we release an expression of Aberfeldy finished in a different red wine cask. Each cask adds different fruit and oak flavours to our delicate spirit. One of last year’s offerings was a 15-year-old Aberfeldy finished in Cabernet Sauvignon wine casks from Napa Valley. Three years older, this year’s release of Aberfeldy 18 Years Old has been finished in the same type of cask, and for a longer period than the previous bottling. 

Aberfeldy 18 Year Old Limited Edition is first matured in a combination of refill casks, and then finished in ex-Cabernet Sauvignon Wine Barriques, sourced from the world-famous Napa Valley, California’s best known wine-producing region.
